As I read Serendipity, I became deeply engaged in this story of the relationships of people living in truly tough times. It reminded me of the positive aspects of my early years before life became so complicated by information overload and the technology with which we surround ourselves.
As the title (the name of the main character) implies, serendipitous events play a big role in this book. Some readers might view the seemingly impossible web of coincidences unrealistic, but I have personally experienced equally "unbelievable" life events. Reading about such events in the lives of others—even fictional characters—can be deeply touching and leave a lasting sense of wonder and gratitude for the unexplainable way things work out just the way they're "supposed to."
Ruth White's writing reminds me of the gentile style of early 20th Century English authors like Elizabeth Goudge. Serendipity is a book I chose to savor, and it left my mind fed, my heart satisfied, and my spirit uplifted.
